Baker's Cysts
-
Definition: A Baker's cyst, also known as a popliteal cyst, is a fluid-filled swelling that forms behind the knee, typically due to joint issues like arthritis or meniscal tears.
-
Causes:
-
Often associated with knee joint conditions, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or meniscus tears.
-
Can result from increased synovial fluid production due to joint inflammation.
-
-
Symptoms:
-
Swelling at the back of the knee, which may be noticeable or feel like a lump.
-
Pain or discomfort in the knee, particularly when bending or straightening the leg.
-
Stiffness or limited range of motion.

ULTRASOUND-GUIDED BAKER'S CYST DRAINAGE
One of the primary benefits of ultrasound-guided cyst drainage is its minimally invasive nature. Unlike traditional surgical removal, which requires incisions and general anesthesia, ultrasound-guided drainage only involves a small needle or catheter insertion, minimizing tissue damage and scarring. This approach generally leads to quicker recovery times, with most patients able to resume normal activities shortly after the procedure.
Additionally, ultrasound guidance enhances the precision of the procedure, reducing the risk of complications such as inadvertent injury to surrounding tissues. It allows for the real-time monitoring of the drainage process, ensuring that the cyst is adequately evacuated without damage to nearby organs or blood vessels. The ability to visualize the cyst in real-time also helps to avoid the need for exploratory surgery in cases where the cyst is deep or located near sensitive structures.
Ultrasound-guided drainage is also an effective option for recurrent or persistent cysts. If a cyst reoccurs after being drained, the procedure can be repeated with minimal risk to the patient.
READ MORE ABOUT BAKER'S CYSTS
A Baker's cyst is a fluid-filled swelling that forms behind the knee, often caused by joint conditions such as arthritis or a meniscal tear. It occurs when excess synovial fluid accumulates in the knee joint and protrudes into the popliteal bursa. Common symptoms include swelling, pain, stiffness, and limited knee movement. While the cyst may not always cause symptoms as it develops, it can rupture, leading to sudden pain and swelling in the calf. Treatment typically involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation, as well as medications to reduce inflammation. In some cases, aspiration or surgery may be required.
