READ MORE ABOUT HAND & WRIST PAIN
Wrist and hand pain is a common concern in orthopedics, affecting individuals across various age groups due to a range of conditions, from acute injuries to chronic degenerative diseases. The hand and wrist are highly complex structures, consisting of bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and joints that work together to facilitate a wide range of motions essential for daily tasks. Pain in these areas can significantly impair functionality and quality of life, making early diagnosis and treatment crucial. Common causes of wrist and hand pain include traumatic injuries, repetitive strain, and degenerative diseases. One of the most frequent injuries is a fracture, often involving the distal radius, which occurs due to falls onto an outstretched hand. Other fractures, such as those of the scaphoid bone, can be particularly challenging to diagnose, as they may not always show up on initial X-rays. Sprains and ligament injuries are also common, especially after twisting or impact. Carpal tunnel syndrome, caused by compression of the median nerve as it passes through the wrist, is a leading cause of hand pain and numbness. It typically results from repetitive wrist motions, such as typing or using a mouse. Tendinitis is another frequent cause of wrist and hand pain, including conditions like De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, which affects the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist, leading to pain and swelling. Overuse injuries from repetitive movements are also common culprits in conditions such as trigger finger, where a finger becomes locked in a bent position due to tendon inflammation. Inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis can also cause chronic pain in the wrist and hand, leading to stiffness, swelling, and joint deformity. These diseases often result in progressive damage to the cartilage and bones, contributing to both pain and reduced function.
