READ MORE ABOUT ANKLE & FOOT PAIN

Ankle and foot pain are common complaints in orthopedics, often resulting from injuries, degenerative conditions, or congenital abnormalities. The foot and ankle are complex structures composed of bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and joints that work in concert to provide support, balance, and mobility. Pain in these areas can stem from a wide range of causes, affecting patients of all ages. Common causes of ankle and foot pain include traumatic injuries like sprains, fractures, and dislocations. Ankle sprains are particularly frequent, often occurring when the ligaments are stretched or torn due to sudden twisting or overextension. Fractures, particularly of the metatarsals, talus, or calcaneus, can result from direct trauma or falls. Other common injuries include Achilles tendonitis, where the tendon at the back of the ankle becomes inflamed, and plantar fasciitis, which causes heel pain due to inflammation of the tissue connecting the heel bone to the toes. In addition to trauma, degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis can lead to chronic pain in the foot and ankle. This condition involves the breakdown of cartilage in the joints, resulting in stiffness, swelling, and pain, particularly with movement. Flat feet or high arches can also contribute to abnormal wear and tear on the foot, leading to discomfort and potential deformities. Treatment options for ankle and foot pain vary based on the cause. Conservative treatments, such as rest, ice, physical therapy, and the use of orthotics, are common for soft tissue injuries. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial in preventing long-term disability and improving patient outcomes.
