  • Location: Typically found in skeletal muscles, common areas include the neck, shoulders, upper back, and lower back.

  • Cause: Trigger points can develop from muscle overuse, poor posture, stress, injury, or muscle imbalances.

  • Symptoms:

    • Localized pain at the site of the knot.

TRIGGER POINT TREATMENTS

Trigger Point Injections with Prolotherapy

  • What is Prolotherapy? A regenerative injection technique using dextrose or other irritants to stimulate tissue healing and reduce pain.

  • Combination with Trigger Point Injections: Prolotherapy can be used in conjunction with trigger point injections to enhance tissue healing, reduce muscle pain, and improve function.

  • How It Works: Prolotherapy irritates the targeted area (trigger point), stimulating the body’s healing response, encouraging collagen production and tissue repair.

  • Benefits:

    • May provide longer-lasting relief compared to standard trigger point injections.

    • Helps improve the strength and integrity of ligaments and tendons around the trigger point.

    • Suitable for chronic conditions or when trigger points are associated with musculoskeletal instability.

  • Common Uses: Chronic muscle pain, ligament and tendon injuries, and persistent myofascial pain.

Trigger Point Injections with PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

  • What is PRP? A treatment that uses a patient’s own blood, processed to concentrate platelets, which contain growth factors that promote healing.

  • Combination with Trigger Point Injections: PRP can be injected into trigger points to accelerate healing by promoting tissue repair and reducing inflammation.

  • How it Works: PRP injections release growth factors to repair damaged tissue, increase blood flow, and reduce pain.

  • Benefits:

    • Provides long-term pain relief and tissue regeneration.

    • Helps in healing damaged muscles, tendons, and fascia around trigger points.

    • Effective for both acute and chronic myofascial pain syndromes.

  • Common Uses: Chronic pain, muscle injuries, and conditions where tissue healing is impaired or slow.

READ MORE ABOUT TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS

Trigger point injections (TPIs) are a common treatment for myofascial pain, a condition where muscle fibers form tight, painful knots known as trigger points. These knots can cause localized pain and refer pain to other areas of the body, often resulting in significant discomfort and reduced mobility. Trigger point injections involve injecting a local anesthetic, corticosteroid, or a combination of both into the affected muscle to relieve pain and reduce muscle spasms. The procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting, and the injection targets the specific trigger point identified through physical examination. Ultrasound guidance is often used to ensure the needle is precisely placed. Trigger point injections offer several benefits, including rapid pain relief, improved muscle function, and the ability to break the cycle of muscle tightness and spasm. TPIs are particularly effective for conditions like tension headaches and fibromyalgia. While the procedure is generally safe, there are minor risks, such as infection, bleeding, or temporary soreness at the injection site. Most patients experience significant improvement, though multiple injections may be needed for chronic cases.
