Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway surrounded by bones and ligaments on the palm side of the wrist and hand. When the median nerve (located on the palm side of the wrist/hand) is compressed, symptoms can include numbness, tingling and weakness in the thumb and fingers. Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by entrapment of the median nerve in the wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome causes paresthesia, pain, numbness, and other symptoms in the distribution of the median nerve due to its compression in the carpal tunnel.
TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME IN RALEIGH, NC
As with most orthopedic conditions, patients will often begin with a combination of physical therapy, anti-inflammatories, ice and rest (and in some cases, steroid injections).
When these methods are no longer effective, Carolina Nonsurgical Orthopedics offers the latest in cutting-edge treatments to reduce pain and get you back to the activities you enjoy. Some of these innovative alternatives to surgery include Orthobiologics and Regenerative Medicine treatments, such as:
-
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections: Use your own platelets to reduce inflammation and accelerate healing.
-
Prolotherapy: Uses dextrose (sugar water) in place of steroid to reduce pain and promote healing.
-
Ultrasound Guided Nerve Injections: A needle is inserted near the compressed nerve and a fluid is injected around the nerve to gently release it from the surrounding tissues or scar tissue.

Anatomy: The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway in the wrist, surrounded by bones and ligaments, through which the median nerve and tendons pass. Causes: Repetitive Wrist Movements: Activities like typing, assembly line work, and repetitive hand motions. Injury: Trauma or fractures to the wrist can increase pressure within the carpal tunnel. Medical Conditions: Diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, hypothyroidism, obesity, and pregnancy can increase risk due to swelling or inflammation. Anatomical Factors: A naturally smaller carpal tunnel or variations in wrist anatomy can predispose individuals to CTS. Symptoms: Numbness, tingling, or a "pins and needles" sensation, especially in the thumb, index, and middle fingers. Pain in the wrist, palm, and fingers, often worsening at night. Weakness in the hand, making it difficult to grip or perform fine motor tasks.
